Kitchen Range hoods do more than remove the smell and assist in a better quality of air they also add to the look of your kitchen. However, when buying a new range hood there are certain things you should look for. First of all you want it to be easy to clean so make sure that there are no areas such as corners and gaps for the grease to build up. If you choose a fixed range hood which has a flat bottom the cleaning become so much easier.

A fixed range hood usually covers most of the stove and work better than the retractable ones. The fixed range hood has a much bigger filter and cover all of the cooking plates.

With the retractable range hoods you are able to draw a frame of the structure out to cover the cooking area and the fan and light comes on automatically and push it back in again when you are finished using it. This model does not do as good a job because of the smaller steam area.

The canopy range hoods with the free standing flue in the middle of the kitchen are very fashionable but are also very costly.

Most range hoods can be installed in either ducted or recirculating mode. The ducted system has some sort of vent or pipe going out through the ceiling to let all the steam and smells outside. This is probably the best system but also the most expensive because of all the work involved such as knocking a hole in the ceiling or the wall for the pipe to fit through.

If you live in a place where it is impossible to install a ducted range hood then you should go for a recirculating system as an option. This type of range hood is not as effective but will do the job to some degree. The carbon filter will restrict the airflow.

All range hoods have filters but for it to work as well as possible you need to clean it often because the cleaner you keep it the better your range hood will function. The filters which are non-washable will need replacement now and again and this can ad to the expenses of your range hood.

A range hood in recirculating mode will also need replacement of the filters on a regular basis as these are made of carbon and can not be cleaned.

If you have any sort of practical skills and like the do it yourself method then it should not be too hard to install a range hood. You need to make sure that there is a power plug near by or you will need a licensed electrician to install one for you. But if you have the basic tools it should be possible to install it yourself or with a bit of help from a friend.
